DSFSI at DSLL Panel: Copyright and Data Science—Legal Challenges in African Data Projects

The Data Science Law Lab (DSLL) recently hosted a dynamic panel discussion focused on the intersection of copyright, law, and data science in Africa. DSFSI was proud to participate through lab members Prof. Vukosi Marivate and Dr. Tsosheletso Chidi, who joined moderator Prof. Chijioke Okorie for a wide-ranging conversation. Held as part of our ongoing collaboration with DSLL, the event explored real-world legal, ethical, and community challenges faced by researchers working with African language data—and why these issues matter for innovation and inclusion in AI.

Prof Judy Wawira Gichoya: Carnegie African Diaspora Fellow Visit to University of Pretoria

We are thrilled to announce the upcoming visit of Prof Judy Wawira Gichoya, who will be joining us at the University of Pretoria from 8 to 25 July 2025 as a Carnegie African Diaspora Fellow. Prof Gichoya will be hosted jointly by the Data Science for Social Impact Research Group (DSFSI), AfriDSAI (African Institute for Data Science and Artificial Intelligence), and the Faculty of Health Sciences. This visit represents another significant step in AfriDSAI’s commitment to advancing transdisciplinary, Africa-centric AI and Data Science research while building bridges across disciplines and strengthening African leadership in AI innovation.

The Data Science for Social Impact (DSFSI) team at the University of Pretoria proudly participated in the Global AI Summit on Africa 2025 (GAISAfrica2025), held in Kigali, Rwanda, and hosted by the Rwanda Center for the Fourth Industrial Revolution. The summit gathered researchers, policymakers, funders, and innovators to shape the continent’s AI future—with a focus on sovereignty, inclusion, and shared infrastructure.

Prof. Vukosi Marivate will deliver the 2024 Bernard Price Memorial Lecture on Thursday, 26 September 2024. His talk, titled “Charting a Path for African Low-Resource Languages – A Multifaceted Approach to Research and Development,” will explore the challenges and opportunities of advancing Artificial Intelligence in Africa, specifically in language development. Prof. Marivate will emphasise the need for multidisciplinary approaches beyond technical solutions to address the cultural and human aspects essential to language innovation.

Bringing together over 600 passionate attendees from across the continent and beyond, the Indaba once again proved to be a cornerstone event for Africa’s thriving AI community. In this post, some of our team members—Fiskani Banda, Seani Rananga, and Matimba Shingange—shared their unique experiences, highlighting the event’s profound impact on their academic and professional journeys.

From Data Engineering to Natural Language Corpora - The DSFSI 2022/2023 Summer Internship

Richard Lastrucci and Isheanesu Dzingirai - The main focus was collection, processing and creation of parallel corpora in the 11 official languages of South Africa. We collected multilingual data by building web scrapers, we processed and cleaned this and other extracted data before performing sentence alignment to produce the parallel corpora. We also improved and documented Masakhane Web.
