We welcome applications for the following positions:

🧭 Important Note on the Application Process
Depending on your program, the process of joining DSFSI differs slightly:
✅ MSc and PhD Applicants
- Step 1: Apply to DSFSI first (via our internal application process).
- Step 2: If shortlisted, you will be interviewed by our team.
- Step 3: If successful, you will receive guidance on how to formally apply to the University of Pretoria with DSFSI as your proposed research group.
⏳ Please do not apply to the university before being accepted by DSFSI.
✅ MIT in Big Data Science and Honours Applicants
You may apply directly to the university programs (MIT or Honours) via the standard UP application process. Once enrolled or accepted:
- Apply to join DSFSI as your research group.
- If accepted, you will be assigned a project and supervisor within the lab.
📚 Pathways into the Lab
PhD in Computer Science or IT
- Topic must align with DSFSI’s focus areas.
- Entry through DSFSI application and interview.
MSc in Computer Science
- Research-based degree supervised within DSFSI.
- Entry through DSFSI application and interview.
MIT in Big Data Science
- Apply and be accepted to the lab. We strongly suggest you take COS 802: NLP for Data Scientists and completing your MIT 807 Mini Dissertation under DSFSI.
Honours in Computer Science
- Apply and be accepted to the lab. We strongly suggest you enrol in CO760: Natural Language Processing, COS 783: Data Mining and conduct your COS 700 Research Project with DSFSI.
Postdoctoral Researchers
- Apply to DSFSI with a 1–2 year research proposal.
- Candidates are expected to bring leadership to projects and may co-supervise students.

Do I need to be an expert in data science to apply? No. We welcome learners, career switchers, and multidisciplinary thinkers.

Can I apply without a supervisor? Yes. We will help match you to a supervisor if you are accepted into the lab.

Will funding be available? Yes. We aim to support as many students as possible through fellowships, research assistantships, and other support depending on need and full-time/part-time status.
